Is Asomugha the new Champ?

November 19th, 2008, 12:40 pm · Post a Comment · posted by Frank Schwab

Teams don’t test Raiders cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha, who is pretty much taking away his half of the field this season. Against Carolina, star receiver Steve Smith had one catch against Asomugha for 9 yards, and Asomugha had an interception. A cornerback shouldn’t tie a Pro Bowl receiver like Smith in that matchup.

That kind of dominance from the cornerback position should be familiar to Broncos fans. For most of his Broncos career Champ Bailey has often been ignored. That was the case for most of this season before he has missed the last three games with a groin injury. Bailey just turned 30, so Asomugha might be in the process of taking over as the AFC West’s dominant cornerback. At very least, Asomugha is having a great season and if he matches up against Broncos receiver Brandon Marshall on Sunday, Marshall will have a tough time getting many receptions.
