Running back Ryan Torain, coming off knee surgery, looked explosive and strong during the morning practice, getting to the second level on many runs during 9-on-7 drills.
With Knowshon Moreno holding out, Torain is the third running back behind LaMont Jordan and Correll Buckhalter (although Peyton Hillis also did some tailback work in single-back sets) and he did not look like he was coming off a major injury.
“Ryan made some good runs today,” McDaniels said. “He’s a physical guy, big guy, the kind of back we’re looking for.”
As for Moreno and fellow holdout Robert Ayers, McDaniels said every day they miss they hurt their chances of having a bigger role on this year’s team. The pick before Ayers, Tampa Bay quarterback Josh Freeman is signed, as is the pick after Moreno, Washington defensive end Brian Orakpo. The market is getting set, which should help in negotiations.
