Rookie safety David Bruton has quickly moved up the depth chart, and has replaced injured strong safety Brian Dawkins in the first-team base defense. Bruton was a free safety in college, and was drafted two rounds behind fellow safety Darcel McBath in April, but he was tabbed to move into Dawkins’ spot.
“I am surprised,” Bruton said. “I’ve put in work, I’ve put in a lot of effort, off the field and on the field.”
The Broncos haven’t said much about Dawkins’ injury, but Bruton made it sound like he might be holding the position for a while. All Josh McDaniels would say about Dawkins injury is it wasn’t “devastating” and he shouldn’t be out too long.
“What happened with Dawkins it’s sad but you get your call and it’s time to step up and be a man about it, do your job and hope for ‘Dawk’ to have a speedy recovery,” Bruton said.
