Earlier this season, safety Brian Dawkins brushed off a question about playing at Oakland, in front of the “Black Hole.” He played in Philadelphia, he explained, so he had seen it all.
This week, the rest of Dawkins’ teammates get to see what he is talking about. The Broncos haven’t been to Philadelphia since 1995, when they wore different uniforms, Mike Shanahan was in his first year as Denver’s head coach and John Elway was still a couple years from becoming a champion.
The Eagles have some of the most passionate and wildest fans in the NFL. Buckhalter agreed with Dawkins assessment of Oakland’s fans not measuring up to those in Philadelphia.
“I played at the ‘Black Hole’ this year and was like, no, it’s nothing on Philadelphia,” said running back Correll Buckhalter, who played with the Eagles for eight seasons. “It’s a whole different level.”
Eagles fans will be intense on Sunday, with Dawkins’ return and a big game for Philadelphia’s chances of winning the NFC East.
“They’re just rowdy,” Buckhalter said. “If you saw the 49ers, they probably hit those guys 300-400 times with snowballs. You’ve got to have thick skin to play in that city.
“They booed everybody in my career there, except a little blind kid. They booed Santa Claus, they booed famous people that sing, there’s only one person that wasn’t booed, and he was a little blind kid. I was surprised, but they didn’t boo him.”
